Quotes

..."Let's not pre-judge, and let's afford this individual, like any individual, the opportunity to defend themselves," Demetriou said on Friday. "We don't even know if this case will get to court, the charges could be dropped, they may end up in court where they'll be heard, but let's not start speculating on what may or may not happen. "They are just charges, he is contesting those charges, he is adamant that he wants to contest those charges and have his day in court and we should respect that. The League chief wouldn't be drawn on whether Jurrah could face punishment for bringing the game into disrepute after court proceedings conclude. But in recent years other players have faced tough sanctions for poor off-field behavior, in decisions made well ahead of the slow legal process. Ben Cousins was stood down for 12 months by the AFL Commission, but police charges were dropped. Essendon's Michael Hurley was suspended even before his day in court on assault charges. And Andrew Lovett was dumped by St Kilda, but a jury later found him not guilty of rape. Although Carlton's Heath Scotland continues to play this season while he awaits a court date on charges stemming from a summer-time bar brawl near the Murray River town of Yarrawonga. "All these examples that people are throwing up are completely different," Demetriou insisted. "I actually think the public does defend the presumption of innocence, it's only you people that want to start condemning people before they have their day in court," he told reporters. "Take a deep breath, have a cold shower and let the process take its due course." Jurrah is due back in court, in person in central Australia, on July 23. Two days earlier he could be playing in Darwin when Melbourne takes on Port Adelaide. A Northern Territory magistrate has adjusted Jurrah's bail conditions to allow him to play in that match. ...told the court alcohol may have been a factor among some of the witnesses, as many people allegedly present at the dispute had been drinking. "To be fair, there is some disparity in the oral evidence in terms of who did what" he said. Counsel for Jurrah, John McBride, said identification may be an issue in the case
The Tigers, one of four clubs on 20 points, lost Jermaine Wardel to state U-18s and Michael Charles (eye injury). "We haven't travelled there too well over the past few years" noted Labrador coach Brad Moore. "We have to be at our very best."
