Previously, Mr. Smith served as president, Avnet Technology Solutions Asia and head of New Opportunities & Partner Development. He also was president of Avnet Partner Solutions, a division of the former Avnet Computer Marketing, in Europe and Australia, and as president of Avnet Electronics Marketing, EMEA, a post he assumed in August 1998. Mr. Smith began his career at Avnet in 1978 in field sales in Avnet's Electronic Components division. In the 1980s he held various management posts at Avnet's Electronic Components division in the United States, including several general manager positions, and was appointed vice president, Northeast region, in 1989. In 1991 he joined Avnet's Computer Marketing Group as Eastern area manager and subsequently was promoted to senior vice president of sales for North America. He was named executive vice president for Avnet Computer Marketing in 1993, following the acquisition of Hall-Mark Electronics. In 1995, he became executive vice president of Avnet Hall-Mark Computer Products. Named president of the former Hall-Mark in 1996, in 1997 Mr. Smith became president of the Computer Marketing Group, Europe, a post he held until his promotion to president of Avnet Electronics Marketing, EMEA. He was named a corporate vice president of Avnet, Inc. in 1996.
