Interestingly, the Pole speed for that first race was 196.386 mph while today's Pole sitter Jeff Gordon turned in a lap of 191.623 mph. Talladega is a massive tri-oval which has banking of 33 degrees in the turns. The 4,300 foot frontstretch is 16.5 degrees while the 4000 foot backstretch is a mere two degrees. The grandstands will hold 143,231 NASCAR fans. It used to be easy to pick a winner at Talladega, just pick the manufacturer Chevrolet, and one of the Earnhardts. But times have been a changin" . 2012 Talladega: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-Up & Race Preview [PaddockTalk - May 06 2012]

...The first NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond was run back on April 19th, 1953, and was won by Lee Petty in a "53 Dodge. The race had 27 entries and a Pole speed of 48.465 mph - though that was original half-mile track. Tonight, NASCAR's oldest Pole sitter Mark Martin will start at the front ahead of 42 other entries after putting up a Pole speed of 128.327 mph. Historically, Richmond International Raceway has been a favorite of the bow-tie boys. But things have generally changed. On May 2nd of 2009, Kyle Busch and his No. 18 Combos Toyota broke up what had been a all-Chevrolet party over the previous seven visits to Richmond. From 2006 to 2008, Chevrolet had won six straight races. Busch's triumph ended that winning streak, and started a new trend for the Toyota brand. Toyota had five straight triumphs until Kevin Harvick broke through for victory last fall in a Chevrolet. Which also means neither Ford or Dodge have won at Richmond since 2005. But another trend that hasn't been bucked - yet - is that Kyle Busch wins the first visit to Richmond each season. With that in mind, we are going to be Mr. Obvious and pick Kyle Busch to grab his fourth straight Spring win at Richmond. You can't beat his numbers over the last six races (3 wins, 5 top-fives, and a pole position). Busch has also scored more points at Richmond than another other driver over that stretch.
