Quotes

...I really thought he could play a bit, but Fevola is a perfect, modern-day example of what happens to you when you don't toe the line," Blight said. "It hasn't worked out very well for him. "I thought David Parkin (Fevola's first AFL coach) was pretty honest about it when he said they didn't handle him very well. "We are all human, and you don't mean to, but most of us somewhere in our lives will take an easy way out if we know we can get away with it." The man who led Adelaide to the 1997-98 flags and Geelong into three other Grand Finals believes the business of AFL football in 2012 means harsh assessments and examples sometimes have to be made for the sake of the team. "Being involved with the (Gold Coast) Suns now, there are some issues that you have to be careful with," he acknowledged. "But eventually the scoreboard will kill you. "I am a great believer in that and eventually, if you are not doing the right thing as a player, you run the risk of not being there any more." Blight said sprays were "a harsh reality" of the game, but they should not be dished out too regularly. "I don't think you can forever give too many of them. You can't do it every week because it would bore them (the players) brainless," he said. "But occasionally it is just a good reminder that this is a win business we are in." Blight makes no apologies for any of the bursts he handed out as a coach, just as he doesn't care to revisit any of the ones directed his way as a player. "You believed what you said at the time," he said. "After it, maybe, you might think, 'I could have done that better'. But that's where you were at the time.""
..."I would think it's against the trend of most other sports in the world," he said. "In my humble opinion, and nobody else agrees with me, our game will go through a nice evolution to the older blokes again running, or managing the show, and the younger blokes doing the daily work. "We'll learn that the young, keen blokes we've got in senior roles now would be fantastic assistants, and what we need is very mature, balanced individuals who become the manager." Parkin coached Carlton in 2000 when Worsfold and Freo coach Ross Lyon were his assistants. "I probably haven't worked with better quality people than those two blokes," he said."
...I think over the last couple of years with Nic coming through it's been a matter of how can we try and have an impact up forward," he said. "It was something I didn't really know how to do. It's something I really enjoy and hopefully it continues for a while. I'm not sure when the end is coming." Eagles coach John Worsfold labelled the collection of ruck talent in today's derby the best "we'll ever see"...
