Quotes

...They were in a hurry to see (the rings). When they finally got them, that look on all their faces, that smile, was just awesome. We were like, "Cmon, Coach Gainey, we know you have those rings. Let us have them, senior Tevin Taylor said. I was surprised how big it was when I got it. The ring a sparkling backdrop with a blue RM dwarfs the 2010 state championship ring. Like his teammates, senior Lavon Brutus couldnt hide his smile. When I saw it, I was just like, 'Wow, he said. It shows how hard we worked. When you see the ring, you know we accomplished our goal. In addition to Rocky Mounts booster club, several other sponsors donated so Rocky Mount could purchase the rings. Donnie Tharrington of Dons Body Shop, Hardees, Quinton Leggett of Peanut Services Inc., Melvin Mitchell of Allstate and the Alumni Chapter of Winston-Salem State University helped make the rings possible. Gainey said the athletics program is able to do things like buy rings for champions only because of outside efforts. For parents and other people in the community to see what they do is great for our kids, Gainey said. They can supplement what I cant from the school so we can dodo something like this. More, the rings will signify a special year for Rocky Mount. The Gryphons did not lose after the new year and mowed through the 3-A competition on the way to winning the state championship. Many of the players that played on Rocky Mounts 2011-12 championship team played for Gainey from the time they were 8 years old, when he was coaching them on a local youth basketball team. Gainey had a special bond with this group, which became the first senior class he has had in which all graduates will attend college in the fall. Seeing the ring brings everything back, Gainey said. They were anticipating them because it shows all the hard work they put in, and also the friendship and love they have for one another. Taylor, one of two players who played on the 2010 and 2012 state championship teams, along with forward Terrill Hilliard, said he always will remember his years playing basketball at Rocky Mount when he sees the ring. Its always going to make me think of everything and everybody the people I grew up with, the coaches, my teammates that Ive come to love, Taylor said. We always wanted to be here and now we are. 0 Comments"
"I loved all my players but J J had a special place in my heart," Bryant said. "He was like a son to me. He really was."
